The Challenges of Travelling with Babies and Small Children - A Personal Journey

Travelling with young children can feel like embarking on a grand adventure—full of excitement but also fraught with worries. I remember my own anxieties when I first took my nearly two-year-old on a flight. The anticipation was overwhelming, and my mind was consumed with “what ifs.” What if he was the loudest person on the plane? What if he couldn’t sit still? What if all the sleep routines and habits we had worked so hard to establish fell apart during our holiday? And how on earth would we handle late nights and daytime naps?

When our flight day finally arrived, I was brimming with apprehension. But as it turned out, my fears were much greater than the reality. My son’s initial excitement quickly gave way to sleep, and he ended up sleeping for almost the entire flight. It was a pleasant surprise, and seeing other families with kids on the plane reminded me that we were part of a larger community of parents facing similar experiences. Many of them I imagine had been tormented by the same worries and fears as I had been.

Worries and Doubts Once We Arrived

The flight might have been manageable, even enjoyable, but once we arrived at our destination, a new set of worries took over. How would my son adapt to sleeping in an unfamiliar environment? Would the new surroundings be too hot or too noisy for him to rest properly? I wondered if his daytime nap schedule would be completely disrupted or if he’d even manage to nap at all. And what about the evening entertainments and later nights? How would he cope with the change in routine?

I found myself questioning if this holiday was even a good idea. Would we all be so exhausted that we couldn’t enjoy ourselves? Would our plans be overshadowed by sleep struggles and tantrums? These doubts crept into my mind, casting a shadow over the excitement of our trip.

Embracing the Experience

Despite these concerns, the reality turned out to be far better than I had feared. My son, after an initial period of adjustment, adapted remarkably well. The unfamiliar environment, though initially daunting (for me rather than him), became a part of our routine. He found comfort in the new setting and managed to adjust to the warmer temperatures without issue. His daytime naps, while different from home, still happened, often when he was most in need of rest.

Evenings turned out to be less of a challenge than anticipated. My son either joined in the fun of our evening activities or happily fell asleep in his pushchair. Late nights became a natural part of our holiday rhythm, and we all found a new balance.

What began as a holiday filled with uncertainties and “what ifs” transformed into a time of joyous discovery and memorable experiences. It taught me that while it’s completely natural to worry, these concerns often diminish as the adventure unfolds.
